Great Debaters

I just saw the movie The Great Debaters and I think it is one of my favorites of the new year. I have to admit I did cry at some parts, but the movie was worth the $8.75. I seriously did not expect the graphic scenes of lynching, but without those breath taking moments the movie would not have been the same. My favorite parts of the movie would have to be when Henry got slapped on the face by Samantha, just because any woman would slap their cheating boyfriend's on the face and the closing debates at Harvard University.
The movie made me think about the stories I have heard from my grandma's time and my father's generation when it was still partially segregated and people were unjustly treated. I think about it now and things have really changed for some, but not for others. Perhaps this movie was perfectly timed in its release because people even those who study Black history should always be reminded about the past and remind all people how people can be so vicious just to gain power and control over others and do whatever means to reach those uncivilized and unmoral objectives. This movie did a great job in demonstrating the stigmatizim that being black is bad, slow, stupid and unable to compete in the fast pace of the European white civilized world. I studied black psychology in my undergrad year and I realized that the system has been created to fail for the minority groups. Even the movie has depicted the handicapped system that all minorities must face in order to actually compete in a fast pace world, which is already dominated by the European white society. The question is when will people of all decent be able to compete of fair solid ground and have the same equal rights as their fellow light skinned neighbor.
